Few experiences in life are as exciting and as challenging as childbearing. Profound and dramatic changes occur in a relatively short time. Childbearing is a challenge to the new mother, the newly developing or changing family unit, society, and the nurse who assists in the childbearing process. The maternity nurse is in a unique position of providing care to the unborn.

The goal of maternity care is a healthy pregnancy with a physically safe and emotionally satisfying outcome for both mother and infant. Consistent health supervision and surveillance are of utmost importance. Many pregnant women and their families are unfamiliar with the changes accompanying pregnancy. A knowledgeable maternity nurse can help a pregnant woman recognize the relationship between her physical status and care plan. Sharing information encourages the pregnant woman to participate in her care, depending on her interest, need to know, and readiness to learn.
