Nancy Gehir, CMA (AAMA), is a medical assistant at Walden-Martin Family Medical (WMFM) Clinic. She was hired at WMFM Clinic shortly after passing her CMA exam. She has recently accepted a position to help the outreach providers. Outreach providers deliver specialty services that are not offered at WMFM Clinic.
Nancy will be assisting the neurology providers, who come to the clinic weekly to see patients. Prior to starting with neurology, Nancy spent some time reviewing her anatomy textbook and researching common diseases. Today, she is helping Dr. Arzt and Tammy Tamar, a nurse practitioner.
While studying this chapter, think about the following questions:

• What structures are in the nervous system?
• What are the functions of the nervous system?
• What are commonly diagnosed neurologic diseases and disorders? What are the etiologies, signs and symptoms, diagnostic processes, and treatments?
• What are the medical assistant’s primary responsibilities when working with patients who have neurologic diseases and disorders?
