16 years of age and up, 2.5 GPA taking into consideration the population, counselor approval (the medical apprenticeship cannot replace an AP or dual enrollment course), 1 semester and 1 internship session.

Course Description:
Sponsored by School Based Health, authorized under the USA Apprenticeship authority per standard 29 CFR ƨ 29.5 (b) (2). Upon completion of this course students shall obtain an industry standard certification for Medical Assistant from the US Department of Labor.

The intent of this course study is to prepare students aged 16 and up with the opportunity to become a qualified Medical Assistant (MA) for entry-level positions in a variety of practice settings. The student will prepare to become an effective multi-skilled member of a health team and employable as a Medical Assistant at the conclusion of completing the core competency.

Goals of this curriculum include:

Comply with regulations set by the National Apprenticeship Standards.
Comply with regulations set by the State of California.
Achieve entry level competencies, which satisfy industry needs.
Promote lifelong learning skills.
Apply tools that stimulate or enhance learning strategies.

General Overview:
The Medical Assistant apprentice curriculum is advance preparation for the CA certification examination when students turn age 18. Students are required to enroll for 1 semester of classroom related instruction and up to 500 hours (about 3 weeks) of unpaid internship placement, MIP paid internship programs lasts up to 10 weeks (minimum of 10 hours per week). There may be funding opportunities for paid internship subject to availability. Should a student drop out of the program prior to the completion of the course requirements, the student will be placed on suspension in the national apprenticeship program registration and will not be eligible to receive the industry standard certification for Medical Assistant. However, the student will retain any certificates completed.

In this course study, the students will be provided an introduction to various careers in the Medical field related to the Medical Assistant pathway where overall job opportunities are expected to be widespread. Studies will include a basic understanding of the systems of the body with associated medical terminology and diseases, basic patient care, taking vital signs, charting, medical ethics as well as understanding patient privacy laws. Students will learn about the various medical field specialties and their perspective roles in a variety of healthcare settings. Students will be introduced to one hundred different medical career pathways. Students will complete a work-based learning experience (community classroom) with live medical professionals during an on-site clinic rotation. Students will rotate through three specialties to provide a broad practical experience of specific duties, such as emergency rapid response, screenings related to chronic illness, and administrative duties, including electronic health records, claims processing, and coding. With the completion of this Semester’ and 10-week internship program and receiving a high school diploma, students will have the competency requirements to register for the California State Examination to become a certified Medical Assistant or work as an unlicensed Medical Assistant without the State of California examination.

Mentored Internship Program (MIP)

The MIP project provides opportunities for students 18 and older and at multiple stages of their education to gain practical on-the-job experience. The goal of the MIP project is to enhance the professional development of diverse students through thoughtful mentored internships and to grow the future behavioral health (BH) workforce.

What is Youth Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship programs for high school students combine academic and technical classroom instruction with work experience through a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). It provides the foundation for students to choose among multiple pathways after high school – to enroll in college, to enter an apprenticeship program, begin full-time employment, or a combination.

What is Pre-Apprenticeship?

Pre-apprenticeship is a program or set of strategies designed to prepare individuals for entry into Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAP) or other job opportunities. Pre-apprenticeships may last from a few weeks to a few months and may or may not include wages or stipend. Pre-apprenticeship programs have varied program elements; however, at the core, places an individual on a pathway to employability through a RAP.

Do you earn college credit while participating in apprenticeship programs?

Yes! Most apprenticeship opportunities include on-the-job learning and related training instruction provided by apprenticeship training centers, technical schools, community colleges, and four-year colleges and universities, sometimes through distance learning. Often apprenticeship sponsors work directly with community colleges that do provide college credit for apprenticeship experience.

Can previous work or classroom experience be used towards completion of an apprenticeship program? 

Yes, though it may vary by program, previous work or classroom experience may be used towards completion of an apprenticeship program. If your prior coursework aligns with a Registered Apprentices Program’s curriculum, and your sponsor approves this coursework as relevant, then previous coursework may count towards completion of your program. Otherwise, previous coursework must be reviewed by your program sponsor and a determination will be made on a case-by-case basis. Regardless of accepted credit, all apprentices must still participate in at least 6 months (equivalent to 1,000 hours) of a Registered Apprenticeship Program to gain a completion credential. 

What will I receive after I complete a Registered Apprenticeship Program?

The Office of Apprenticeship (OA) or the State Apprenticeship Agency (SAA) grant apprentices who have successfully completed a Registered Apprenticeship Program with a nationally recognized Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship.

How do I request a replacement certificate of completion?

Requests for replacement certificates should be directed to the Office of Apprenticeship (OA) or the State Apprenticeship Agency (SAA) office. Please visit our Contact Us page to find the apprenticeship office in the state you completed your apprenticeship and reach out to that office for a copy of your certificate.

What are my rights as an apprentice or applicant? How do I file a complaint?

All apprentices and applicants to a Registered Apprenticeship Program who believe they have been discriminated against based on race, color, religion, national origin, gender, (including identity and orientation), pregnancy, genetic information, or because they are an individual with a disability or a person 40 years or older may submit a written Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) complaint by using the form located on the Apprenticeship Complaints website.
