Career Advancement

The career ladder is a model that some institutions use to allow for professional advancement. A career ladder recognizes the clinical expertise of the nurse and provides a mechanism for financial compensation. Each institution clearly lists and defines its criteria for advancement on the ladder. Items generally include adherence to facility policies, completion of mandatory education programs, and demonstration of leadership and clinical skills. Nurses make application for consideration of the career ladder by submitting a portfolio illustrating their accomplishments. A portfolio is an organized account of an individual’s education and professional accomplishments.
