Lesson 1, Topic 1
In Progress

April 11, 2024

Anita James, CMA (AAMA), has been working at the Walden-Martin Family Medical (WMFM) Clinic for 16 years. She loves her position as a medical assistant in a family medicine clinic. Every day is different. Each patient is unique. She has seen a number of children grow up over the years. Children who were toddlers when she started are now driving and thinking about college. The time has flown by.
Anita is working with Dr. Perez today, and they have a very busy schedule. A number of patients are in for follow-up visits, and a few new patients have appointments today, too.
While studying this chapter, think about the following questions:
            • What is the purpose of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and coagulation testing?
            • What tests are included in a complete blood count (CBC)? What are their reference ranges?
            • When looking at hematology test results, can you differentiate between normal and abnormal test results?
            • What is the medical assistant’s role in blood transfusions?
            • Why are the following test results important to a provider: blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, cholesterol, liver enzymes, and thyroid hormones?
            • What tests are part of a chemistry panel, and what are the reasons for performing each panel?
