April 11, 2024

Stephanie Hill has been a limited machine x-ray operator (LXMO) at Walden-Martin Family Medical (WMFM) Clinic for a month. She completed her training, passed the certification examination, and this is her first position as a LXMO. She is excited and nervous about her new position. Stephanie has learned how to conduct a patient assessment and perform x-ray examinations. Stephanie’s first patient of the day is Martha Gordon. Mrs. Gordon is an older adult with knee pains who uses a wheelchair. Stephanie provides quality care when she is caring for her patients.

While studying this chapter, think about the following questions:

1. What is the scope of practice for limited x-ray machine operators?
2. What are the four essential requirements for the production of x-rays?
3. What are the prime factors for radiographic exposure?
4. What is the purpose of the inverse square law?
5. What is the importance of the exposure indicator?
6. How does pathology influence technical factors?
7. How do limited x-ray machine operators protect themselves from radiation exposure?
